In dressage, the riding boot has long since become more than just a piece of equipment. The tall boot (or dressage boot) has become a visual highlight. The rule is: the higher the better - and in dressage this does not mean heel height, but the boot shaft, and especially the striking dressage arch.
The traditional black dressage boot is designed to stabilise the leg and provide good contact with the horse. Unlike the jumping boot, the shaft of the long dressage boot is firm. This means the leg lies more steadily against the horse. Long boots with a hard shell, however, prevent precise contact with the horse. More modern tall boots are therefore somewhat softer and more elastic on the inside, while the outside is firm and raised. The extra high dressage arch visually lengthens the leg and is also intended to stabilise the lower leg. Like all riding boots, long boots must fit well and guarantee excellent support. Tall boots with lacing are the best way to achieve this; they can be individually adjusted by lacing and therefore fit particularly comfortably on the leg and around the ankle. Long riding boots for men usually have a practical zip.
The dressage arch is an elegant eye-catcher that should not be missing from any dressage boot. As an absolute must-have, it is now available in many different variations. Everything is available, from interchangeable dressage bows to exotic materials such as crocodile leather, shiny buckles and crystals. In the dressage arena, however, one continues to rely on tradition. The classic black leather tall boot or a Cavallo long boot made of patent leather is a must. But laced tall boots and patent leather long boots with glitter have long been part of everyday show wear.
Not every long boot is necessarily bought for the big arena. As a classic riding boot, it is also popular for training and for leisure riders, as it guarantees a secure hold. And the rule is: whatever you like is allowed. Brown tall riding boots and long riding boots in cognac have been absolutely trendy for many years. Whether on a grey, black or dark brown horse, they are always attractive. Blue long riding boots, on the other hand, are somewhat more subtle but nevertheless distinctive. Cavallo tall boots with crystals and classic Ariat long boots are still the most popular.
The question always arises as to how tall boots should sit. But it is quite simple. First of all, you have to feel comfortable. The boot should fit snugly on your leg. When you bend your knee, the best boot fits directly under your kneecap, but does not pinch you. Your ankle should be perfectly enclosed; if the boot wrinkles there, it can be uncomfortable. You should also bear in mind that most boots are made of leather, and leather riding boots will widen and settle after a while. For particularly narrow legs, you should therefore opt for styles with an extra narrow shaft.
At horze we offer a wide range of high quality tall boots from many great brands such as Tonics, Imperial Riding, Tattini and many more. Furthermore, discover lined Winter Riding Boots for the cold days.
